Description

A coloured etching titled "Ascension du Sieur Adorne à la Citadelle de Strasbourg, 1784." It commemorates the first aerial ascent from the city of Strasbourg, which took place on May 26, 1784. The balloon depicted is a Montgolfier style hot air balloon, built and flown by Pierre and Degarbiel. This historic aircraft stood approximately 76 feet (23 meters) tall and had a circumference of 160 feet. These are lithograph reproductions produced by Éditions du Chêne in Paris around 1956 as part of a series celebrating historical ballooning.
