Description
Fabulous iron cruisie lamp dating from the 1800's.
Originating in Scotland, there would originally have been a second, slightly larger, bowl below this one. Fish oil would have filled the top bowl and dripped to the bottom bowl whilst a wick would have burnt the oil to give light to the dwelling.
A number of superstitions revolved around cruisie lamps. A blue flame was said to foretell that the next day would be windy, while a green flame indicated a witch present. A spark meant that news was coming to the person in the direction the spark flew.
